Effect of lycium barbarum polysaccharide on morphogeny and function of pancreatic islet B cells in NIDDM mice

2007
The non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) mice induced by high-sugar,high-fat diet and injecting little dose of STZ were treated with LBP (20mg/kg,40mg/kg) for 4 weeks. The effects of LBP were then evaluated by examining fasting blood glucose (FBG),blood insulin and analysising A,B cells of pancreatic islet by immunohistochemistry technology. The results displayed that the level of FBG is lower in the groups of LBP (including the dose of high and low) than that in model group and the level of insulin is increased. The density of B cells is increasing, but A cells is decreasing and the section area, nuclear area,nuclear-to-cytoplasm ratio of B cells are higher in LBP group treated with high dose than those in model group. In conclusion, LBP possess the action of lowing blood glucose, improving morphogeny and function of pancreatic islet B cells and increasing the secretion of insulin in NIDDM mice.
