Gamma-Irradiated Nylon Roughness as Function of Dose and Time by the Hurst and Fractal Dimension Analysis

2010
In this work, results obtained through statistical methods of Fractal Dimension and Hurst Coefficient in order to determine the nylon roughness are presented. Nylon 6-12 as used to study surface properties modification of roughness with gamma radiation application in different dose under air and argon atmosphere. Depending on the radiation dose applied, samples modified their roughness in different levels Effect of the kind of atmosphere and post-irradiation period as considered for anal sis too. AFM images ere digitalized and by means of statistical treatments their profiles ere obtained. Fractal Dimension and Hurst Coefficient reveal the surface roughness of the samples, besides the changes on the polymer structure modification mechanism, revealing that with to radiation dose a crosslinking mechanism and partial damage occur, while with higher radiation dose scission mechanism and permanent damage takes place. These results ere compared to those obtained with other techniques as SEM. AFM and thermogravimetry. Using Fractal Dimension and the Hurst Coefficient in order to measure the roughness of polymeric materials is a good alternative analysis technique.
