Investigation on status of knowledge, attitude and behavior of cigarette smoking among different occupational population in Nantong City.

Objective To understand the status and KAP of cigarette smoking and attitude to tobacco prohibition in public places.Methods Convenient sampling and quota sampling were used to investigate 331 staff from medical institutions,schools,government organizations,public transportations,restaurants,and net bars.The contents of investigation consisted of basic information,situation of active smoking and passive smoking,related knowledge and attitude.Results The overall active smoking rate was 21.15%.The rate in male(50.74%) was higher than in female(0.51%,P0.001).The passive smoking rate was 56.62%,51.28% for male and 58.76% for female(P=0.260).The right knowledge rate was high in "active or passive smoking do harm to health"(90%),but it was lower in "specific related diseases caused by passive smoking"(90%).Comparing with other occupational population,the attendants had higher proportion of cigarette smoking(65.63%) and lower proportion of right knowledge and attitude.The teachers had lower proportion of passive cigarette smoking(29.53%).The rate of supporting total or partly tobacco prohibition in public places ranged from 81.87% to 99.70% and the rate in male was higher than in female,nonsmoker was higher than smoker.The supporting population was high in "medical staff should not smoke facing the patients"," students should not smoke",and "officials should not smoke in session".Conclusion The smoking rate of male was high.The rate in attendants was higher than in other occupations.Status of passive smoking in officials,attendants,and medical staffs is not optimistic.The management intensity of smoking banning in public places should be strengthened.The health education on the harm of active or passive smoking should be improved to promote the attitude to smoking control in different occupational population.
