President's Address, 1993: A time of change for science and service

In 1959 man had not yet orbited the earth or walked the moon. The ladies could not take their eyes off Elvis, and gentlemen preferred blondes and the alluring charms of Marilyn Monroe. A “byte”, however you spelled it, had to do with food, not information. That was the year the American Society for Clinical Nutrition (ASCN) was established. In September of this year we celebrate the beginning ofASCN’s 35th year of existence. During the past 35 years the Society has made a difference! It has nurtured the increasing significance of nutrition in the promotion of health and general well-being during the total life cycle of the individual, and it has broadened awareness and increased the appreciation of the role of nutrition in health promotion and the treatment and prevention of disease. Improvements in preventive medicine, diagnostic techniques, and therapeutic procedures have resulted in health care undreamed of just a few years ago.
