Carbon clusters as a source of C, C2, C3 and their ions in the atmospheres of Comets Giacobini-Zinner and Halley

The encounters of spacecraft with comets Giacobini-Zinner and Halley show anomalously high relative abundances of C2(+) and C(+) respectively. It is suggested that carbon clusters may be important in the production of these anomalies.
