Role of secondary ethylene insertion in the growth of C−C bond chains in the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide on a cobalt catalyst

A mechanism is proposed for the formation of higher hydrocarbons through various types of intermediates, including dimerization of ethylene to give a four-carbon intermediate, which participates in subsequent chain growth.
