The ultraviolet absorption spectra of some m- and p-methoxyphenyl thioethers

Abstract The u.v. absorption spectra of m - and p -MeO·C 6 H 4 ·SR show that steric interactions affect the K -bands more than they do the B -bands which arise from the —S·C 6 H 4 — chromophore. Expansion of the octet of the sulphur atom appears to occur in the series p -MeO·C 6 H 4 ·SR when the electron-releasing interaction between sulphur and the aromatic ring is sterically curtailed.
