Physical and state-space models for control and system identification of heat exchangers in nuclear power plants

Abstract Physical models were derived of a typical heat exchanger to provide an in-depth understanding of its performance, especially as a component in more complex systems such as nuclear power plants. Also state-space models were derived to assist in the design of appropriate adaptive controls which are necessary to assure optimal plant performance. The use of the models in system identification for the purpose of wearout detection is demonstrated for a liquid metal reactor. The principles are applicable to other reactors and can be adapted for various types of heat exchanger.
