Segmental/Subsegmental Hepatic Arterial Embolization — A New Therapy for Hepatocellular Carcinoma

1993
We carried out segmental Lipiodol-TAE in 114 patients with HCC in order to preserve hepatic function and to reinforce the anticancer effect. It was performed by advancing the catheter into the subsegmental or segmental hepatic artery feeding the tumor and by superselective injection of Lipiodol mixed with the anticancer drug and gelatin sponge particles. In non-resected 100 patients with HCC, the cumulative survival rates were 94.1% at 1 year and 63.8% at 3 years Segmental Lipiodol-TAE is one of the best therapies for HCC when the tumor is localized within one segment.
