Variations in the Shapes of Coronoid Process in Adult Human Mandibles

2012
The shapes of the coronoid processes of both sides of 164 dry adult human mandibles (100 males and 64 females) of Indian origin were studied and classified into three types: hook shaped; triangular and rounded. Hook shaped coronoid processes were found in 90 (27.4%) sides, triangular in 160 (48.7%), and rounded in 78 (23.78%) sides. Hook shaped coronoid processes were found bilateral in 36, triangular in 65 and rounded in 28 mandibles. Of the remaining 35 mandibles, the appearances were different on both sides. The incidence of rounded type was equal in male and female mandibles; in triangular type it was slightly more in the females while the hook shape was slightly more in males.
