Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy in Assessing Axonal Loss in the Corpus Callosum Related with Volume of Regional T1 Lesion Load in Multiple Sclerosis

2001
Recent histopathological study has shown a significant loss of the calculated total number of axons crossing Corpus Callosum (CC) in MS relative to non-diseased brain [4]. A correlation between regional lesion load and both axonal density and total number of axons crossing CC region has been also reported demonstrating the loss of axons in NAWM may be the result of degeneration of axons that are transected in MS lesions. This study shows the potential value of 1 HM RSI in MS in predicting axonal loss in CC by measuring NAA:Cr ratio noninvasively. A correlation is also observed between metabolite changes and volume of T1 lesion load.
