ABSTRACT With the objective of verifying if different cultivarsof soybean modify the estimates of the optimum plot size and ofthe numbers of replications, an experiment was conduced in theagriculturist year of 2000/01 in area pertaining to the Departmentof Crop Science in Santa Maria University Campus. Two cultivarsof soybean were used (BRS 137 and Fepagro-RS10), conductedin a randomized block design with three replications. The size ofplot was evaluated through the method of maximum modifiedbending. The test of parallelism of SEBER (1976), was used toverify the heterogeneousness of reply among tested cultivars. Thenumber of replications was estimated through the describedmethodology for HATHEWAY (1961). It can be concluded that tocultivars studied the number of replications that confers anadequate accuracy is equal to seven and the optimum plot size is3.96m 2 . Key words: optimum plot size, number of replications, soil andexperimental material heterogeneity. INTRODUCAO Atualmente, a cultura da soja encontra-seem destaque no cenario nacional, devido a rentabili-dade que esta proporcionando ao produtor rural. Den-tre os fatores responsaveis por esse fato, esta o setorda pesquisa que apresenta inovacoes tecnicas e cienti-ficas melhorando cada vez mais o desempenho da pro-priedade rural. Pesquisas de qualidade passam por di-versas fases, dentre elas estao o planejamento, condu-cao, analise e divulgacao dos resultados. O planeja-mento experimental adequado e fundamental para queos resultados apresentem qualidade.
