Appendix 5 in 53:8

2011
The philological basis provided by Thomas is the supposed homonymous Arab. Cognate root to become still, quiet, at rest. He also drew attention to renderings in the versions as well as to some Jewish commentaries. Johnstones main objection to Thomas studies is that he fails to examine the Arab. root in its context, and thus ends up with interpretations based on the Hebrew root unsupported by the Arab. root. Johnstone does not have objections to Thomas thesis that there is an equivalent with Arabic wadua be still, at rest. Keywords: Arab; Isa; Johnstone; Thomas
