Relationship of vascular endothelial growth factor gene polymorphisms and susceptibility to viral meningitis

2012
Objective To explore the relationship between the genetic polymorphism vascular endothelial growth factor and susceptibility to viral meningitis. Methods A total of 138 cases of viral meningitis and 152 healthy subjects were studied.Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism(PCR-RFLP) method was adopt to determine VEGF gene promoter region of-460T/C,-116G/A,and +405G/C locus gene polymorphism for all specimens, comparing CETP VEGF gene polymorphism in viral meningitis group with control group, comparatively analysed. Results In +405 G/C sites the proportions of GG,GC,CC genotype in viral meningitis group were 16.67%,46.38%,36.95% respectively, and were 28.95%,47.37%,23.68% in the control group, the difference was statistically significant. The frequencies of G,C allele in viral meningitis group were 39.86%,60.14% respectively, and were 52.63%,47.37% in the control group, the difference was also statistically significant in comparison. But in-460T/C,-116G/A sites viral meningitis group and control groups of genotypes and allele frequency was not statistically significant in comparison. Conclusions VEGF +405G/C genetic polymorphism may be associated with the occurrence of viral meningitis.Where C allele may be the susceptive to gene viral meningitis, but G allele may be the protective gene.-460T/C,-116G/A genetic polymorphism has no definite relationship with the occurrence of viral meningitis.
