Primary Health Care: The Chinese Experience

Primary Health Care: The Chinese Experience is a slender but useful paperback issued by the World Health Organization. The stimulus for the book was a two-week seminar on primary health care. Those in attendance were ministers of health, advisers, and health administrators from a wide spectrum of developing nations: Zimbabwe, Pakistan, Sudan, the Philippines, and Jamaica, to give but some examples. The organizers, sponsors, and underwriters were The United Nations' Children's Fund, World Bank, WHO, and the Ministry of Health of the host country. The seminar took place in China, Yexian County. This county, selected as the sample area for analyzing the primary health care system developed by China, is on the Shandong Peninsula. Geographically, the Shandong Peninsula is on the eastern edge of China, projecting up and out into an arm of the Pacific ocean, the Gulf of Chihli, and Yexian County is a coastal region surrounded on three
