The application of Carbopol gels and enzyme containing methylcellulose gels for removal of starch based adhesives in albums
1996
According to the results the application of Carbopol poultices is limited. On paper objects only amine free poultices should be applied. This is because after an application time of less than 1 min. Ethomeen C-25 starts to migrate from the poultice into the substrate. Trithanolamine as well shows strong migration and discolouration tendency even if poultice materials is interleaved by Hollytex. In addition, poultice materials itself undergo intensive yellowing. On the contrary, poultice materials on basis of Carbopol in aqueous systems with sodium hydroxide or ammonia as neutralizing agent show only slight yellowing. In any case, a direct contact between poultice material and paper was avoided by means of Hollytex as interleaving. In this case, paper objects show no discolouration effects even after prolonged ageing procedure. For aqueous systems about 30 percent organic solvent can be blended to the system. The pH range is varying between 5 and 9. With the system a gentle humidification of local areas of paper according to the Ore-Tex principle is possible. Application is recommendable in case of swelling and removal of adhesives on water-sensitive objects.
