English translations of synecdoche in Huang Di Nei Jing based on cognitive mechanism of metonymy

2015
The uses of rhetoric are abundant and flexible in Huang DI Nei Jing(Nei Jing for short) and the proper expression during translation would exert a profound influence on the readers home and abroad. Therefore, the exploration of inviting and competitive rhetoric translation theories, methods and techniques are necessary. Based on this understanding the essay introduces the idealized cognitive model(ICM) of synecdoche, in which the cognitive process of synecdoche is defined as one salient feature of one conceptual entity be relevant to that of another one/ones within the same ICM, hence the feature of the former conceptual entity activates readers' understanding of that of the latter one/ones. And because the cognitive processes of metonymy and synecdoche are similar to each other, the translation principle and techniques of metonymy in three translated works of Nei Jing were compared and examined under this scheme.
