Floral structure and pollination in Pelargonium
1996
The heterogeneity of Pelargonium in terms of structural blossom types and pollination syndromes indicates an independent and repeated evolution of convergent flower morphs in the genus and even in the sections. This suggests that pollinators played an important role as a selective force during the evolution of Pelargonium. Evolutionary lines in floral characters are surveyed and examples of striking convergencies in flower morphs of species placed in different sections are highlighted and discussed in the light of the current subdivision of the genus.
