Arsenic contamination of water resources is one of the serious risks threatening human health and natural ecosystems. Arsenic contamination of drinking water has been reported from many parts of world. In some arsenic affected areas, substitution of drinking water source by a safe and easily available one may not be possible during part or all of the year, or may be very expensive. Arsenic removal may be a more appropriate water supply option in these situations. This article describes unconventional water technologies for arsenic removal. This experiment studies arsenic removal using a reactor with iron bacteria in continuous phase. In continuous experiments, the effects of pH, contact time, initial concentration of arsenic and iron bacteria dose, temperatures and O2 concentrations, were investigated. Results indicated that the highest arsenate removal efficiency occurred at pH 7,76 (97.76%). The results of continuous experiments on the reactor containing iron bacteria showed that as the bed contact time increased from 30 to 180 min, the secondary arsenate concentration changed from 169 to 3,8 µg/l. The results of this study showed that a reactor containing iron bacteria is a good adsorbent for removal of arsenic compounds from contaminated water.
