Abstract Where renewable energy sources are available solar, small hydro, biomass, wind and other renewables can often provide remote communities and businesses with the most reliable and affordable source of electrical energy. Ray Holland, Lahiru Perera, Teodoro Sanchez, and Dr Rona Wilkinson, ITDG, UK review recent practice in rural electrification using renewables and discuss some of the issues that have proved to be critical in practical experience of off-grid approaches over the last few years.
