An Efficient Data Collection Algorithm for Wearable / Mobile Tracking System in IoT /WSN

2018
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) / Internet of Things (IoT) integration is the way ahead for all connected devices. Nevertheless, all applications based on WSN/IoT, its edge devices posed major constraint, which is the limited life span of energy resources. One of the challenges is how to track things with the minimum energy consumption. Consider the Global Positioning System (GPS) activated edge devices and it is classified as complex data generated devices, which produced large number of bits to represent its location information, which means a lot more energy is consumed. This is because the cost of energy consumed to transmit one bit via WSN/IoT is higher than running several microcontroller instructions. In this paper, we proposed an efficient data collection algorithm for wearable and mobile tracking devices within the IoT/WSN system. Performances of the proposed algorithm were evaluated through simulation utilizing real-time dataset. The improvement in terms of percentage energy saved by applying the proposed algorithm is 77%.
