Punishment of heretics: comparisons and contrasts between Western and Eastern Christianity in the Middle Ages

This reviews the culture of burning, punishment and penances for heresy in the western and Byzantine worlds and examines why the practice diverged on both sides. It finds that burning and punitive measures is a measure, less of religious policy, than of secular state power.
