The paper by ~,kerstr~m and L0gdberg I entitled 'An intriguing member of the lipocalin protein family:. 0trmicroglobulin' raises an interesting question of nomenclature. The term 'lipocalin' was first coined in 1987 from the Greek words ~,moo or 'lipos', meaning fat, and K0~¥~ or calyx, meaning cup 2. It describes the group of small proteins that includes 0tl-microglobulin, ~-lactogl~bulin and plasma retinol-binding protein, which can bind small hydrophobic molecules within their central conical barrel or calyx 3.
