True Wayfaring Christian

1948
At a meeting of the Editorial Board held in January, it was unanimously agreed that Christian Gauss, long-beloved Dean of Princeton and our consulting editor, should be the subject of the Portrait in this number. It was further agreed that Dean Gauss, who was not present, should not be informed of this decision, but should receive the Summer number as a surprise "birthday gift" celebrating his seventieth year, finally, we agreed to make this Portrait a composite that is, instead of having one writer contribute a long article, we would invite three people who had known him in different ways to write three short ones. These pieces follow, together with the letter of thanks which Dean Gauss wrote to the Board members upon receipt of their telegram, congratulating him on his seventieth birthday. (Editor)
