Difference Hysteresis Result between Filter Paper Method and Pressure Plate on Laterite Soil in Engineering

2021
Landslides in natural slopes of residual soil are a common problem encountered in tropical regions. Water content and suction influence the permeability, shear strength, volume change and deformability of unsaturated soils especially laterite soil. The nature for water retention curve that was drying curve but wetting curve was ignored and assuming the result same with drying curve or called hysteresis. The hysteresis in soil water characteristic curve (SWCC) at a given suction value, the water content on the wetting path is lower than that on the drying path. This suggests water content in the drying (or leakage) branch of water potential – water content relationship – is higher than water content in the wetting branch for a comparative estimation of water potential. Filter paper method was cheaper than pressure plate method and can make it with high matric suction between 0-500,000 kPa compared with pressure plate limited with 0-1,500 kPa. Not all type soil is suitable with low value of matric suction. The difference hysteresis curve and relationship result also discussed. Laterite is a soil commonly considered to have formed in hot and wet tropical areas. Diverse techniques to demonstrate the above marvels produced and analyzed.
