Del averno al infierno medieval. Reescrituras francesas de un mito

2015
EnglishIn this paper we analyse the ways in which a variety of myths belonging to the Greek mythological universe of the Averno, most of them exhibiting triadic structures, have been reinterpreted in the Medieval Literature after their assimilation and dissemination through the Latin Literature. In addition, we establish the different functions, according to the intentions of the different authors, whereby such myths were re-written in some Medieval French texts, especially of didactic or moral character, in which the myth of the Averno was christianised by incorporating images and symbols used by the Medieval interpreters. These reinterpretations became essential in the configuration and consolidation of the imagery of Hell as an instrument for coercive persuasion and submission of believers.
