APPLYING VARIOUS WAY TO STRENGTHEN VOCABULARY ACQUISITION INEFL CONTEXT: A COMPARATIVE RESEARCH

2020
This research tends to find out if a acquiring method of words in which learners acquire new words through Deep Processing approach, in the other way round, a high degree of linguistic or cognitive participation while acquiring new words, leads to better understanding, recognition, and recall than one in which students acquire the new words via rote-acquiring, as a matter of fact, “Acquiring new vocabulary via memorization of decontextualized word index”. In this research, two approaches facilitate deep processing of vocabulary were practiced. Carrying out this research we shall employ experimental inquiry in which the same test as a Pre test, Post test, and the delayed test will be administered to get accuracy. Fifty pre-intermediate level students of EFL in Foreign Languages School at Cyprus International University Lefkosa will be involved in this research. These students will be dispersed in the two equal groups. The Experimental nature of group students were exposed to treatment by deep processing while the control group students were given a vocabulary index including either Turkish equivalent or English meaning of the target word. The test consisted of three sections like A) matching words with meanings, B) using appropriate words for the blanks in sentences, C) using appropriate words for the blanks in paragraphs of a context-cloze test, and included 32 questions. The t-test analysis of the results of the Post test and delayed test of the groups showed that the difference was very significant and important in the retention of vocabulary items on the behalf of experimental group and the deep processing approach.
