Finite element modelling of electromagnetic crimping on threaded surface

Electromagnetic crimping is a high-speed forming method used to join dissimilar metals without physical contact or the formation of metallic bond. In this paper, a non-coupled finite element model is developed using ANSYS Maxwell and ANSYS Explicit Dynamics. Electromagnetic crimping of Cu-SS304 joint with the inner steel tube having an outer threaded surface is modelled. The deformation of the tubes, stress and strain etc. are analysed. Experiments are done to validate the numerical results. Both the discharge energy and pitch of the thread can be increased to enhance the outer tube deformation. This will result in stronger interference fit joints.
