GROWTH STRATEGIES ADOPTED BY STATE CORPORATIONS IN KENYA TO ENHANCE PROFITABILITY: A CASE OF POSTAL CORPORATION OF KENYA

State corporations have had little or no competition for several decades are currently facing very stiff competition and hence steady profitabilty.This is not true anymore due to entry of other players. The objective of this study was find out whether market penetration, market development, product development and diversification strategies can enhance profitability of state corporations, specifically at PCK. The Research design used was descriptive study. The study targeted 123 respondents in management grade at PCK headquarters and 108 of them responded. The researcher used primary data which was obtained through self-administered questionnaires with closed and open-ended questions. The data analysis method used was based on quantitative approach using descriptive statistics. SPSS was used to perform the analysis as it aided in organizing and summarizing the data. The study established that in as much as PCK has large branch network, its market penetration is still poor. It also found out that its market development strategies majorly relied on traditional methods like TV’s. Further it had well differentiated products but its impact on the market was poor. However it also had diversified into both related and unrelated products. It is therefore recommended that PCK should adopt better promotional strategies and also increase its marketing campaigns for a better impact on its profitability. Secondly they should also embrace modern technology in its processes so as to improve efficiency, diversification and better returns. Lastly PCK should employ market research and
