Management of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Adults

Abstract Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental health problem that can have an impact on individuals across the lifespan. ADHD is underrecognized and undertreated in adults. There is a large individual and societal burden associated with ADHD, stemming from lost productivity and high health care costs. The burden of untreated ADHD highlights the need for accurate identification of ADHD symptoms and the provision of evidence-based treatment. The purpose of this article is to provide primary care providers with an overview of ADHD diagnosis, screening, and both pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatment in adults.
