Adaptive predictive regulatory control with brainwave

2003
Publisher Summary This chapter provides an overview of indirect adaptive predictive control embedded in the commercial adaptive controller BrainWave produced by Universal Dynamics Technologies Inc. This technology is recommended for the transition from classic to advanced control when dealing with process challenges, such as dead time, long time constants, integrating characteristics, or significant nonlinearities. This chapter discusses a novel approach for the control of delayed self-regulating and integrating systems based on Laguerre network identification and predictive control. It provides a quick reference document when starting to use the controller and describes simulation and a number of industrial examples of the practicalities associated with the implementation of the BrainWave controller. Issues, such as model identification in closed-loop or noisy systems are not neglected. Specific references to the modeling and control of integrating type systems are also addressed. The chapter describes in detail the modeling method based on Laguerre functions emphasizing its advantage when compared with other modeling methods and provides the formulas used in building adaptive controllers. The enhancement of the controller for integrating type processes or unmeasured disturbances with a given characteristic is also described. It presents the simulation and the field application results.
