Reaction of tricarbonyl(η6-cycloheptatriene)manganese cation with phosphorus ylides

Abstract The phosphonium salt [( η 5 -C 7 H 8 -CH 2 PPh 3 )Mn(CO) 3 ]ClO 4 ( 2 ) has been prepared by the reaction of [( η 5 -C 7 H 8 -CH 2 PPh 3 )Mn(CO) 3 ]ClO 4 ( 1 ) with CH 2 PPh 3 . Deprotonation of 2 generated presumably [( η 5 - C 7 H 8 -CH 2 PPh 3 )Mn(CO) 3 ] ( 3 ), which reacts with several kinds of aldehydes RCHO to yield olefin-containing complexes [( η 5 - C 7 H 8 -CHCHR)Mn(CO) 3 ] ( 4 ) (RMe, Et, CHCH 2 , Ph,C 6 H 4 CH 3 - p , C 6 H 4 NO 2 - p , C 6 H 4 OMe- p ). Reaction of 1 with stabilized ylides RC(O)CHPPh 3 (RPh, Me, H, EtO, MeO) produces compounds [( η 5 -C 7 H 8 -CH 2 PPh 3 {−C(O)R Mn ( CO ) 3 ( 5 ) (RPh, Me, H, EtO, MeO) in high yields, which are too stable to react with aldehydes. An X-ray crystal structure of 4 (Ph) has been determined.
