Perspectiva de las mujeres con lesión medular frente al proceso de la maternidad

Women with disabilities are becoming increasingly more interested in becoming mothers. The purpose of the study is to describe the experiences suffered from this women with disabilities within the process of pregnancy, birth and postpartum. A qualitative study has been performed in which the study population included pregnant women with spinal cord injuries or women who gave birth after the spinal cord injury. The outcomes showed, among others, a caesarean rate of 60% and a 46.6% rate in small- for- gestational age babies. The participants referred a lack of information and education given by healthcare professionals but also a significant lack of knowledge related to spinal cord injury in pregnant women. As conclusions, this study shows a serious lack of communication, an inflexibility of the health system, a lack of support and a lack of plans and programs customized for women with spinal cord injury.
