Synthesis and structural characterization of the bimetallic complex [Fe([9])aneS3)2][FeCl4·2H2O

Abstract Recrystallization of [Fe([9]aneS 3 )Cl 3 ] from hot acetonitrile or methanol resulted in the isolation of a red crystalline product subsequently identified as [Fe([9]aneS 3 ) 2 ] [FeCl 4 ] · 2H 2 O which has been characterized by X-ray diffraction. The bimetallic complex salt is composed of an octahedral, low-spin Fe II cation and tetrahedral, high-spin Fe II anion. Reduction of the metal centre by the ligand and formation of the thermodynamically stable complex [Fe([9]aneS 3 ) 2 ] 2+ in solution is proposed.
