Dual Shape Large Core single-mode fiber for high power applications

2010
We present a Dual Shape Large Core (DSLC) leaky optical fiber design for realization of large-mode area (LMA) single-mode (SM) operation. Fiber is characterized by specially designed core and cladding. Dual shape core and leaky cladding of the fiber is designed to make the fiber leaky only for the higher order modes. Mode filtering of all higher-order modes is governed by the leakage loss of the LP 11 mode. Fiber is able to demonstrate single-mode operation with effective mode area as large as ∼1000 µm 2 . Proposed fiber of few multi-layers can be fabricated by modified chemical vapor deposition technique (MCVD). A fiber with such a large mode area can suppress the nonlinear effects and should be useful for high power applications, including fiber lasers and optical communication systems employing dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM).
