POSTOPERATIVE ENDOPHTHALMITIS CAUSED BY SERRATIA MARCESCENS -- A CASE REPORT AND LITERATURE REVIEW

2015
Purpose: To report a case of acute endophthalmitis caused by Serratia marcescens after cataract surgery. Methods: A case report. Result: A 71-year-old man presented with painful loss of vision in his right eye 3 days following uncomplicated cataract extraction by phacoemulsification. Clinical diagnosis of acute endophthalmitis was made, and intravitreal antibiotics with Vancomycin and Ceftazidime was performed. Serratia marcescens was cultured from the vitreous sample. Despite pars plana vitrectomy with continuous vitreous infusion of antibiotics there was no improvement of vision and pain, resulting in subsequent evisceration. Conclusion: Endophthalmitis caused by Serratia marcescens is rare and led to severe intraocular destruction with complete loss of vision despite intensive treatment.
