Analysis of related characteristics of sea surface temperature and sea surface height in tropical Indian Ocean

2013
Based on the monthly SST and sea level anomaly(SLA)data, the objective of this study is to investigate the correlation between sea surface temperature(SST)and sea surface height in Tropical-Indian Ocean in spatial-temporal structure, with the application of empirical orthogonal function(EOF),singular value decompusition(SVD)and power spectrum method. The EOF results show that the 2nd mode of SST and the 1st mode of SLA share a dipole distribution in spatial structure. Moreover, the two modes demonstrate a lag-correlation and a similar temporal structure by the use of correlation analysis and power spectrum method. The correlation coefficient of the first coupled mode of SST and SLA based on SVD analysis reaches 0.7,and the spatial structures exhibit a reverse distribution on west and east sides of Indian Ocean. The results indicate that the dipole mode of SLA correlates with the monopole mode and dipole mode of SST.Meanwhile, the SLA index and the Indian Ocean dipole(IOD)index(DMI)both share a similar structure. In addition, apreliminary analysis of the physical mechanism explaining the correlations between the above diagnostic facts was conducted.Possible elements that contribute to the above facts were pointed out by making a summary of the other authors' work.
