A standalone muon tracking detector based on the use of silicon photomultipliers

2017
We present the characterization and performances of a muon tracking detector developed by New York University Abu Dhabi and Gran Sasso National Laboratory (Italy) and based on the use of Silicon Photomultipliers and plastic scintillating bars. The remote control of the instrument allows for operation in locations with limited access. The detector has been designed and built with the aim at providing 3D particle reconstruction for the measurements of muon angular distributions with possible use in cultural heritage, archeological studies and for tomography of large buildings.
