The invention discloses a refractory material for smelting titanium and titanium alloy. The refractory material mainly comprises the following components in percentage by mass: 30-44% of ZrO2, 54-68% of SrO and 0-3% of other oxide impurities, wherein the oxide impurities are an additive and fluxing agents, the fluxing agents are titanium oxide or aluminum oxide and the additive is yttrium oxide or boron oxide. The invention also discloses an application of the refractory material in preparing a composite material crucible and a method for preparing the composite material crucible. The refractory material disclosed by the invention has high corrosion resistance to metal melt and is reacted hardly with the active metals and stable in performance and can be used as a potential refractory material of titanium and titanium alloy smelting crucible. The composite material crucible prepared from the refractory material disclosed by the invention has the characteristics of low cost, long life and simple preparation process and can be applicable to smelting high-purity titanium and titanium alloy.
