2012 WALNUT CLONAL PARADOX ROOTSTOCK EXPERIMENTS IN SOLANO AND TEHAMA COUNTIES

2012
Two long-term experiments were planted in 2009 in the Sacramento Valley to evaluate the potential of the new clonal Paradox rootstocks. The experiment in Tehama County is evaluating VX211, Vlach, RX1, and June budded Vlach. The second in Solano County is evaluating VX211, Vlach, RX1, and Burbank. Both experiments included Paradox seedling as the control comparison. Solano trial results for 2011 and 2012 show that VX211’s diameter is significantly larger than the other rootstocks. Though there was a significant difference between the clonal rootstock circumference measurements in the Solano experiment with VX211 being largest and RX1 smallest, these differences did not translate to an observed larger or smaller tree size. In the Tehama trial, no statistics were preformed but Vlach is larger in circumference than the other rootstocks in 2012.
