Beyond the Bay Area: A Description of the Washington State University Writing Project.

Much has been written about the Bay Area Writing Project (BAWP). Although we are greatly (and gratefully) indebted to the important ground breaking done by BAWP, the intention of this article is to look beyond the Bay Area and describe the Washington State University Writing Project (WSU/WP), drawing attention to those features which differed from the BAWP model, and highlighting how the WSU/WP model promoted institutionalization of the inservice gains of our project participants. The BAWP has clearly demonstrated the importance of directing the focus of inservice training towards changing teacher behavior. The exhaustive evaluation of the BAWP conducted by Michael Scriven and associates of the Evaluation Institute of the University of San Francisco commends the BAWP model as an effective inservice
