Avoiding Cracks in Brickwork

1986
Many aspects of movement and differential movement have been discussed. However, other movements and effects of movement that have not been discussed may also affect the performance of the brickwork. Movements such as s settlement, racking, corrosion, etc. have not been thoroughly addressed. Many aspects of elastic and plastic deformations and differential movements also have not been addressed. Consideration of these movements must be combined with the information provided in designing the brickwork for any project, to assure crack free brickwork. This paper has provided general information to assist the designer in obtaining crack-free, properly performing brickwork. The information when used in combination with good engineering judgment should result in brickwork that performs successfully.
