Infections due to Citrobacter and Enterobacter

2008
Citrobacter and Enterobacter are gram-negative bacteria in the family Enterobacteriaceae that are found in water, soil, and as commensals within the human gastrointestinal tract. While these organisms have historically received little attention because of their low threat to humans, they are now emerging as pathogens, especially in immunocompromised patients within the hospital setting. These bacteria are responsible for a variety of different infections and can be challenging to treat due to intrinsic and acquired resistance to antibiotics.
