This paper describes the methods of preparation and electrochemical properties of the hydrophobic (HP) and superhydrophobic (SHP) nanocomposite coatings on the surface of magnesium alloy\, previously processed by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO). Polarization resistance of hydrophobic and superhydrophobic coatings in the initial period of exposure in chloride media is more than 20 and 300 times higher than polarization resistance of PEO-layer, respectively. After 24 hours of exposure the protective properties of SHP coatings are order of magnitude greater than for HP coatings. High corrosion resistance and considerable stability of SHP coatings during their operation are due to a small area of contact with aggressive media and high adhesion of the hydrophobic agent molecules with the coating material.
