ROUNDING CORNERS ON POLES OF POLYGONAL PROFILE.
1971
Abstract Approximate calculations of the effects of rounding by circular arcs the corners on flat-ended poles in a quadrupole magnet are described. Curves are plotted to show how the maximum pole-surface flux density and two field-expansion coefficients vary with effective rounding radius. The same method is applied to the study of a compound pole whose profile consists of a flat tip joined smoothly by circular arcs to straight lines inclined to the axes of symmetry. A singular solution of Laplace's equation which applies to a finite discontinuity of curvature on a continuous-slope boundary is identified.
