Two unusual approaches to posterior orbital tumors: A study of three cases

1985
Three cases of posterior orbital tumors were surgically treated with unusual orbital approaches. The first case is a large schwannoma located in the superior part of the orbit between the globe and the superior rectus muscle and in the intraconal space. The approach was made with Leone's technique across the entire brow from the level of the lateral canthal ligament to the outer angle. The second and third cases demonstrated the importance of a combined medial and lateral approach as described by MacCord. The second case is a primary orbital meningioma referred to us, with, initially, a normal visual acuity and a normal visual field. While the vision and the visual field decreased, the meningioma extended from the posterior part of the globe to the entrance of the optic canal. A combined lateral and internal approach allowed the total excision of the tumor with histological control of the resection. The third case is an optic nerve glioma which was excised with a combined lateral and medial approach. The adv...
