Alcohol and Drug Use Among Fatally Injured Drivers in Urban Area of Kuala Lumpur

The objective of this research was to ascertain the incidence of driving under the influence of alcohol and / or drugs, among drivers who were fatally injured in highway traffic accidents. A cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted utilizing postmortem files obtained from the Department of Forensic Science at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital, in Malaysia. The study found that 11% of fatally injured drivers were positive for drugs, 23.3% of fatally injured drivers were positive for alcohol, and 2.3% of fatally injured drivers had both alcohol and drugs in their bodies. The results were also classified according to illicit drugs, medicinal drugs, and blood alcohol levels.
