NATIONAL FREIGHT AND PASSENGER MOBILITY INDEXES

The primary objective of this study was to identify important parameters that characterize multimodal transportation networks and to combine them into a meaningful index of the adequacy of the transportation system. The resulting measure would include railroad, highway, air, and water transportation. Since one possible application of the index is as a tool for comparing the transport systems of nations, a desirable feature of the index would be relative ease of obtaining the necessary input data. Thus, the data used to compute the index should consist of readily available statistics that are normally tabulated by the applicable government agencies or by other reliable information sources. 23 references, 2 figures, 1 table.
