An efficient wavelength reservation scheme for OBS networks

2011
The current internet is suffering from its own success. As the number of users on the internet and the variety of application transported are growing steadily at high rate. The available bandwidth as well as the best effort paradigm is facing limits. Ubiquitous and frequent congestion situation restrict the use of new time interval application like IP telephony, Video conferencing or online games. Thus there is an increasing demand for both bandwidth and some sort of scalable QoS support too. Optical burst switched (OBS) networks are the prospective infrastructure for supporting future high speed network applications. In this paper, an optimal wavelength reservation approach has been proposed for reducing congestion and managing bandwidth efficiently in OBS networks. Through simulations, it is shown that the proposed reservation approach results lower packet (burst) loss rate as compared to conventional wavelength reservation approaches for optical networks.
