ITER scenario simulations with a non-linear MHD equilibrium code

1998
In the framework of the ITER plasma control system design a simulation campaign was carried out with the non-linear MHD equilibrium code MAXFEA. First, in order to achieve a cross validation of the models, the plasma open loop responses evaluated by MAXFEA code and by the linear model CREATE-L were compared. Different controllers were implemented in MAXFEA and tested against the whole set of nominal disturbances at different equilibria and the results compared with those provided by the linear model. The ITER pulse reference scenario was then reconstructed in MAXFEA and the complete control scheme implemented, including voltage feedforward components and capability to switch between limiter and divertor phase controller. This allowed to perform a dynamic simulation of the ITER discharge and therefore to assess the performances of the control system in driving the plasma magnetic configuration along the desired evolution.
